INTERNAL DOOR SIZES
In Australia, the most common internal standard door size is a height of 2040mm, a width of 820mm and a thickness of 35mm. While this is the common standard, door manufacturers produce doors in a variety of common sizes, these are:
- 2040mm x 520mm x 35mm
- 2040mm x 620mm x 35mm
- 2040mm x 720mm x 35mm
- 2040mm x 770mm x 35mm
- 2040mm x 870mm x 35mm
- 2040mm x 920mm x 35mm
A lot of new homes in Australia are built with higher ceilings and door height can be 2340mm.
EXTERNAL DOOR SIZES
External doors in Australia are also standardized, however the doors are 40mm thick. In some older homes this common thickness, reduces to 35mm. Common external door sizes are:
- 2040mm X 620mm X 40mm
- 2040mm X 720mm X 40mm
- 2040mm x 770mm X 40mm
- 2040mm X 870mm X 40mm
- 2040mm X 920mm X 40mm
WHAT HEIGHT SHOULD A HANDLE BE FITTED?
The Australian Standard AS 1428.1, recommends that the height of a door handle should fall within 900mm and 1100mm above the floor. This is regardless of the size of the door. This is designed for access and mobility.
